It's hard for people to understand how much luck matters and how much being in the right place at the right time matters. And that has been a really important contributor to my career. When I was at the University of Wisconsin, I got a call one day from somebody in the school of education whom I had never met who said that they had just gotten this very substantial grant from the U.S. Department of Education and they needed to have somebody as a part of the team who knew mostly about kids, not schools, and who focused on peer and family influences on academic achievement, which was something I was interested in. And he just said, We'd like to give you some money to do some work in this area. And it's not very often that people come to you and drop money in your lap. And that kind of thing has just happened from time to time in my career, and it's really made all the difference.
