Career Development Institute for Bipolar Disorder

David J. Kupfer (bio) describes how the Career Development Institute can accelerate a career.


The CDI does several things. One, hopefully, it will confirm people's interest in bipolar disorder, that it's the right area to work in, it's exciting, there are so many opportunities that may not exist in other areas of psychiatry to really make a significant contribution. That's number one.

Number two, it hopefully fast tracks the introduction of young people to a cadre of core faculty and at least 40 other people, affiliated faculty, who work in the area of bipolar disorders. It sets up a network of both mentors, role models as well as a support system among each of the classes that participate.

As we know, since we've had five of these already, we now have a cohort of almost 100 young investigators who've gotten into bipolar disorder. That's not sufficient, and I think that one probably can't rest until we really begin to see the fruits of all this level of activity.

So there's a lot of work that we need to do, but this would be, even though on the surface, this is only a three or four day experience, one of the fastest entrée points, it seems to me, to accelerate one's career in bipolar disorder research.
