Mommy Days and Daddy DaysPosted on March 19, 2007 Judy Garber (bio) talks about the challenges and joys of balancing family and work life. |
Well, I mean everyone does parenting differently, but for me the most important thing was getting good daycare and finding someone. Once I knew that he was well taken care of, then I could kind of relax and do my work.
Until that, no, but I had a great daycare situation for him and basically I worked from, you know, whatever it was, 9 to 5:30 - would come home, 5:30 to 8:30 was his time. And no phone calls, no anything and then after he'd go to bed and then work some more.
And you just have to kind of compartmentalize and really devote time. You're never really off for either, being a mother or an academic. And we had mommy days and we had daddy days so all day Saturday he was with me and all day Sunday he was with Dad so we didn't do that much as a family that often except for every night, but it's just, you know, you just have to balance.
But the beauty of it is that you can always--I never missed a soccer game, I never missed a school performance, because you have so much flexibility being an academic that I was always there for him.
