A Pre-Tenure Risk Posted on March 19, 2007 Teresa D. LaFromboise (bio) went against conventional advice in deciding to follow her passion.

One of the most difficult decisions for me in doing the community-based research was actually to embark upon it, because I was invited to do this work the first time with the Zuni Pueblo, and this was pre-tenure, and I knew that it was going to be a very long endeavor. And that there probably wouldn't be articles forthcoming initially, and so I had to really weigh whether that was a wise use of my time and I remember consulting with a few faculty and they advised against it.

But I felt that the opportunity to be invited to do this work, basically to develop an intervention and then later on evaluate it was, and particularly in that community, was just almost too precious and that I needed to go ahead and do it and figure out a way to get the articles in other areas so that perhaps I would be able to, it wouldn't work against me in terms of the tenure clock.
