Research That's Personally Meaningful

Posted on March 19, 2007

Maria Elena Torre (bio) provides a graduate student's perspective on balancing work and research.

I think one of the things that's been most helpful to me in my path as a graduate student or juggling the life of a graduate student is that I've been really fortunate to be able to engage in research that's been personally very meaningful.

And I've been able to find work that complements the research or that allows space and time for the research, or that's a piece of the research and finding ways to take some aspect of, I've been doing a lot of work right now in training youth researchers, and because of this large project where I worked with young people and trained them to be researchers, now folks call on me to consult with them about how to, it's a school district in Virginia that wants to know how can we organize young people and how can we teach them about research, what not, so then that becomes a paid job that can support the other work that I do.

So finding ways to balance, or if you're fortunate enough to weave your work life and your research life together can be sometimes helpful.
