Choosing an Area of Interest

Posted on October 16, 2007

Choose your research topics thoughtfully, advises Joachim F. Hallmayer (bio).

Do your research in a topic which really interests you because otherwise, you have no chance, I think, to evolve. Now, you have to make always some concessions. I mean, it’s absolutely clear that you cannot just do absolutely what you want, but you should definitely think about what you are doing, that you will be doing this basically for the rest of your life. So it is very important that you choose carefully the area.

It’s extremely important that you get your area and you get, really, a specialist in the area and you try to become very, very good in one area. I think one of the biggest mistakes for beginners, including myself, is that you want to do too many things, and then you get basically distracted. And then at the end of the day, you don’t do anything well.
