Changing PathsPosted on October 16, 2007 It is possible to change your research area, believes Joachim F. Hallmayer (bio). |
The other question is, “Can you do this your whole life?” I don’t know. I did it now for a little bit over 20 years now. I don’t know whether I’ll be going to retirement doing the same thing. There may be the point where you really have to do something different. I mean, there’s also a question, “How long can you be really productive in one area?" I think supervisors or professors which are really well-known in the field have, give different answers, so there’s probably no — probably each individual has to answer this by themselves. There are certainly people who can do 40 years, the same thing. But there are certainly also people who are very successful with changing, changing their research area or changing track entirely or becoming a teacher or consultant or whatever.
