Publishing Multidisciplinary ResearchPosted on October 17, 2007 Deciding where to publish multidisciplinary papers is difficult, admits Jordan F. Karp (bio). |
It hasn’t been that much of a challenge I think to work with two primary mentors because well we’re all sort of conflict avoidant so — and we all really like each other and it’s really worked out well.
Yeah, they really troubleshoot for me. They have made it a point to make sure that I’m introduced to people in both the geriatric psychiatry world as well as the pain medicine world. They help me decide where I should publish my findings because that’s really a challenge of multidisciplinary research of deciding where you’re gonna publish because I’m — you know I really straddle so many different worlds, both pain and psychiatry and medicine and in some ways it’s a blessing, but it can also be seen as maybe watering down your body of work because you want to have a corpus in a certain area or a certain discipline.
So they’ve been really helpful in that and that’s something that I think that my peers who are part of the K12 — we all struggle with because you know we’re somewhat of a new breed of multidisciplinary researchers and how is this going to affect our promotion because we publish in different areas and oftentimes we’re integral to a study or we input useful information to a manuscript, but that doesn’t mean that we’re always the first author because we sometimes are spread a little bit — not thinly, but we’re in a lot of different places.
For my rank I have a reasonable publication record in psychiatric journals. So now my goal is to get more publications in pain journals. So that’s really the emphasis right now, but it’s a conscious decision and I have to really think because most of the publications do have both depression and pain in the title. So I have to make a decision where it’s gonna go, where it’s gonna be most effective because ultimately the senior readership are gonna be people that are gonna be writing me letters for promotion. So I need to get known in more than one discipline.
