A More Complicated Picture

Posted on October 17, 2007

Jordan F. Karp (bio) talks about the advantages of working with a geriatric population.

I think with geriatrics, it’s a really special group to work with and so we really have to attend to medical problems and poly-pharmacy, transportation issues, and also the caregiver burden that a lot of their spouses or adult children are dealing with. A lot of them are also depressed because they are dealing with either children and the patient or because they also have cognitive impairment or their own medical problems. So in many ways we’re their psychiatrists and their physicians and their social workers.
So it’s really gratifying because these people do get better. They just often take a little bit longer. It’s fun for me to take care of and study older adults because of the, well the more complicated picture that so many of them do have medical problems and some cognitive impairment that we have to take into account.
