Love and Work

Posted on October 26, 2007

Mark S. Bauer (bio) talks about the balance between work and family life.

Keep one foot outside of research. Smartest thing Freud ever said was someone asked him what makes life worth living and his off the cuff answer was love and work. And work would have taken care of a lot of this CDI thing, but you have to remember the love part, whether it’s family, partners, hobbies, it’s a kind of recreation or re-creation that I think really keeps us fueled for the long run. So you have to remember to kind of keep one foot outside of your work life and make sure that you’re taking care of yourself family-wise, emotionally, etcetera.

We are having - our culture’s slowly changing whether it’s stopping the tenure clock or doing other things with time off, creative job descriptions, but you’re gonna find times when it’s really not explicitly supported and you have to stick up for yourself at the same time. Because to do anybody any good and yourself, you’re gonna have to as I said, be in it for the long run.
