Practice, Practice, Practice

Enjoy what you do and work hard, advises Boris Birmaher (bio).

First you have to enjoy what you are doing, but this is the same like with everything in life. If you want to be – if you want to play your piano very well, one, you have to like it and you have to practice, practice, practice. You want to be a good football player? You have to have a good coach, a good team, but you have to practice. You don’t practice football or baseball then forget it. You want to do movies, it’s like everything is the same. Then if you want to have a career in this area, that’s what you have to do. You have to really apply and have discipline.

It’s true you can do other things, it is possible, but sometimes you have weekends that you would like to see a good movie and you’re very busy because you have a grant and you can’t. You have to delay your gratification or you are – you want to go to the beach, but you have a grant, then you have to say, you have to tell yourself, “Okay, yes, I’m going to go to the beach when I finish the grant.” Again, it’s practice. If you talk to any professional in any area, it’s exactly the same principles. It’s no different here.
