A Clear Hypothesis

Posted on October 24, 2007

Wesley K. Thompson (bio) states that lack of a good hypothesis is a common error.

Lack of clarity in hypotheses is a huge problem. If you can’t translate the hypothesis directly into a statistical model it’s a bad sign. It should be directly translatable, so you have to pin it down exactly.

And that’s actually a large goal when I consult with people. I have to get people to pin down exactly what they mean when they’re running hypotheses.
