Know Your Temperament

Posted on December 3, 2007

Roger D. Weiss (bio) recommends self-reflection in deciding if multi-site work is right for you.

The other thing about multi-site work is you have to know temperamentally what you’re like. I like working in multi-site trials. Some people really don’t. It takes a lot of patience, and there’s a lot of personalities involved. The bigger the trial, the more personalities that are involved. And I think that you have to enjoy working with lots of different personalities and realize that you can’t just make a decision and thirty seconds later implement it.

You have to talk to a lot of different people, because there’s a lot of different people involved and people who have very different attitudes from you. And you may not be able to implement this at all, and if you do, it’s going to take some time. And for some people that’s fine. They’re happy to go through that.

But some people get very impatient with it and don’t really function that well in that kind of environment. And I think you have to know who you are to know whether working in that kind of environment is something that would be generally kind of fun or whether you would think it’s a pain in the neck.
