I've Never Felt Burdened

Roger D. Weiss (bio), has a workable plan B if the grant money dries up.

I’ve never really felt burdened by my career. Best job I ever had was the substance abuse consultant to the Boston Red Sox for about ten years, and so our family went to a lot of Red Sox games. So that was a career thing, but it benefited our lives outside of my career more than anything else I can think of. And my kids became, as I would hope, fanatical Red Sox fans as a result.

And so I think times have changed to some extent, because I started out doing clinical work and then sort of little by little did more research. So I think one reason that it’s felt less like a burden is because I always knew there was a plan B that I would have been reasonably happy with.

It’s easy to be one bad grant review away from a dramatic change in what you’re doing. And you have to always be ready for that. I would be unhappy, but not devastated, if the grants went away. I’d do more clinical work. I like seeing patients.
