Get Input Before Submitting a Proposal

Posted on February 21, 2006

David Brent (bio) encourages senior researchers to get input on their grant proposals.

When I've written a grant, I will get a lot of input before I ever put it in. So that if I know of people who are experts in the field, even though I won't necessarily ask them to be a consultant, I will ask them, "Will you look at my grant?" or "I have a specific question about how to measure this or how to analyze that." In a certain sense, many of the things that would come out in a review I've already dealt with before the grant goes for review. Sometimes people say they're too busy, but particularly if you give them enough time, most people are flattered that you want their opinion. Even at this stage of my career, I still will ask people for help.
