Blending Sociology and Epidemiology

Posted on February 29, 2008

Bruce G. Link (bio) drew on the strengths of two disciplines in forging his own career.

My career path from sociology to epidemiology and blending of the two. I did that because I got interested in health and I wanted to study the determinants of health, and epidemiology provided this great paradigm and method for exploring factors that influenced the health of populations. And sociology, in my opinion, I hope none of my sociologists would listen to this, but isn't as strong on the design aspects. It's good on the theory, it's got ideas, and it's very good on the analysis.

But epidemiology brings this design element that I found very important, and I loved the blending of the two. And I tell people that I'm more of an epidemiologist when I'm around sociologists and more of a sociologist when I'm around epidemiologists. I like to bring the two together, and if I see too much of one and not enough of the other, I'm thinking there needs to be a balance to bring them in line.
