Learn about People Management

Posted on February 19, 2006

David J. Kupfer (bio) reminds researchers that they cannot forget human resources issues.

Now, let's say, you've got the letter of award; you've got to carry it out. Before you run and celebrate, you have to realize that you're probably not going to do the study by yourself, so you're going to have to hire some people. You've got to learn something about all the issues that we call human resources. How does one advertise for a position? How do you recruit? How do you screen? What are you looking for? You've got to learn something about interviewing, not interviewing patients, but interviewing the people who are going to work with you. If you're going to put a team together, then you've got to figure out how these people are going to relate to each other even if it's a small team, even if it's only two people. You've got to learn something about what I call people management very early on.
