Not Ready for Primetime

Posted on February 28, 2006

John Landsverk (bio) talks about getting a disappointing review from NIH.

You've just got to keep doing it. Absolutely. I got back - after my first R01 that I got on the first try for looking at mental health care delivery for kids in child welfare - then I submitted a competing renewal, and I got a score of 467. They didn't triage me only because it was reviewed by a committee outside, because I was the chair of another review committee, so as a courtesy. Well, OK, when you get a score like that, you've got one of two things. One is you can just look the other way, get a little drunk, whatever. I said, "Nah, I ain't going that way," so I pinned it right up on my desk in front of me. I said, "This is OK. Got to think about that." I think they were wrong in only one thing. I really really trust the review system; I think the review system is terrific, and I do not argue with the review system. They were right. That thing was not ready for primetime, should not have been funded, and I learned a great deal from it.
