Privilege and Responsibility

Posted on January 28, 2008

Taking work seriously is a way to honor privilege, explains Margaret Beale Spencer (bio).

I really have a passion for making a difference in the lives of children and families. I think it's a sense of purpose that I bring. I think it's also a sense of conscience and responsibility, and I wouldn't have the nerve not to take this work seriously and work as hard as I do because I'm very clear about who I am, and I'm very comfortable with who I am and that's not the question. The question is, can I look at myself in a mirror and know that I have responded to what I believe is my sense of mission and responsibility? So what's — the excitement of learning new things, that excitement of learning new things and be able to transform what we are learning into strategies that can make a difference; I just think that's incredible. I think that we are really, really just privileged, and I take that privilege very seriously because the privilege means that there is significant responsibility that we have to respond to.
