Put Your Office Near the LabPosted on July 30, 2008 Being present is extremely important for lab management states Robert A. Sweet (bio). |
In terms of lab management I think the thing to do is to be present, so traveling too much, being away, leaving it to someone to run, a technician to do everything I think is problematic. I think you have to be present there, know the processes. You need to know the fundamental processes of the assays you run, the strengths and weaknesses of what you do. You need your staff and trainees to have you there.
And at a practical level one of the really simple things is to have your office adjacent to or near your lab. If you're off someplace else in your office working, and you have to go visit the lab or they have to come visit you, it's I think problematic. It's good to be next door, so you can drop in and solve problems, keep things moving.
