It Took Me Awhile To Go Home That Day

Posted on March 1, 2006

An anecdote from John B. Reid (bio) about his first grant.

Each summer for my first 4 years when I was there, I would take the summer off because you could, being a university professor, and write grants with my mentor Jerry Patterson. In the third summer we submitted a grant, and I got a phone call in the middle of the night from my partner Patterson saying, "Hey, the grant got funded." The next day I walked down and resigned, and my young family and I took off in our car, a '63 Porsche, and went across country and settled into Eugene. I went to work and found that my buddy Patterson had misread the notification from the feds. It said the grant had been approved, but not funded. It took me a while to go home from work that day.
