A Charmed Life Posted on October 19, 2007 Harold Pincus (bio) describes how he became interested in mental health policy issues.

Well, in many ways I've led a charmed life. I've been very fortunate. So, I didn't decide to go to medical school until I was at the end of college, and suddenly got inspired to go to medical school. And then while in medical school, my wife and I were in different cities and I arranged to do some work in Washington, actually do a clerkship in Washington, working in the senate and got credit for that in medical school for the senate health committee, which exposed me to public policy issues, which really interested me. I did my residency in Washington and then happened to read an article, an editorial, in The New England Journal about the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program, applied for it and was accepted and had a terrific experience. Because at that point, the President's Commission on Mental Health was getting started at the White House, and I was a freebie. And so got involved as being a staff person for that, and really wound up being in the middle of the major mental health policy issues going on.
